Single Malt Yoichi
Anyone wanting to enter the world of Japanese whisky should have the Yoichi single malt on their list. The Yoichi Distillery on Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, produces this whisky using a particularly exciting technique: it is still distilled in the traditional way, directly over a coal fire! This not only gives the Yoichi single malt its unmistakable character, but also a certain ‘campfire’ flavour - with a moderate smoke content of around 15 ppm.

Tasting
Nose
The first impression? Fruity with a hint of coast! This Yoichi single malt greets the nose with a light sweetness and subtle flavours of apple peel and honey. This is followed by an elegant floral flavour surrounded by a gentle, yet present peat smoke. If you hold your nose deep enough into the glass, you might also detect a hint of seaweed - ‘sea asparagus’, as the professionals call it. There are also exotic notes of papaya. The fragrance promises a lot and delivers a nice balance between sweet, floral and smoky elements.
Palate
When you take your first sip, you notice the beautiful, soft texture. The whisky is creamy and almost ‘light’ in mouthfeel, which makes it pleasantly accessible for beginners. In terms of flavour, we are greeted by soft vanilla notes and a certain maltiness that feels like fresh hay. There is also a slightly salty flavour that reflects the influence of the coastal climate. If you take a closer look, you will also discover floral notes that are almost reminiscent of spring meadows.
Finish
The finish is medium-long and pleasant, without excessive bitterness. A hint of smoke remains, which blends well with the slightly bitter flavour. An aftertaste that whets the appetite for the next sip and is not too intense or heavy.
Verdicts
Marcel
The Yoichi Single Malt is like a relaxed evening by the campfire – smoky but never overpowering, with a fruity lightness that’s simply enjoyable. Perfect for those who want to explore Japanese whisky without risk, yet without losing character. A genuine pleasure that leaves you curious for more!
Sascha
With its balanced blend of moderate smoke, fruity and salty notes, the Yoichi Single Malt demonstrates a solid structure and drinkability that especially suits newcomers. The subtle peat integration and fine texture create a harmonious interplay, though it could benefit from a bit more complexity.
