Patrisbrunna X-Mas Port (2016) Double Cask

KÖ13 in Paderborn is actually known for its large selection of food and delicatessen. The restaurant also sells a small number and especially some of its own single malts. Today we have a whisky from Paderborn in our glass. The whisky from Paderborn was first matured for two years in an ex-bourbon cask and for another two years in an ex-port wine cask. We are impressed by the deep, strong red colour.

Tasting

Nose

A winey-sweet scent of red fruits, such as currants and blackberries, is in the air. Accompanied by malt and spicy oak, we perceive something that reminds us of cherry nectar.

Palate

The single malt occupies the tongue, but is less full-bodied than the nose would lead one to expect. A good portion of tannins accompanies a sour-bitter fruit note. Interestingly, there is still a malty sweetness lying on top of everything.

Finish

The short finish is slightly oaky-spicy and reminiscent of tobacco leaves.

Verdicts

Marcel

This deep red beauty from Paderborn delivers genuine drinking pleasure with its fruity aroma and malty sweetness, making it perfect for the Christmas season – a dessert whisky that lifts the spirits, even though it still has some room to grow in its fullness.

Sascha

With a clear structure and a harmonious interplay of tannins and malty sweetness, this four-years Port Cask matured single malt from Germany shows solid balance, yet the finish feels a bit short and could benefit from greater complexity.

What it is worth

No auction record for this distillery, so we cannot tell you what this bottle is worth. We would rather say that than guess.
