Nc'Nean Organic Batch 20 (2019/2023)

Whisky is often a play on tradition - but Nc'Nean takes a different approach. The young distillery from the Scottish Highlands focuses on sustainability, organic ingredients and a modern approach to whisky production. Its Nc'Nean Organic Batch 20, bottled in 2023, exemplifies this approach. With no age statement, 46% ABV and an exciting cask combination of ex-bourbon, sherry and red wine casks, it arouses curiosity.

Tasting

Nose

The freshness of this whisky is immediately apparent at the first nosing. A clear honey sweetness meets oak and a fine, slightly acidic note, which provides a certain liveliness. Malt and a hint of gingerbread add a spicy depth, while fruity, fresh citrus notes brighten up the whole. Overall, a very inviting, harmonious nose.

Palate

The first impression is - as expected - fresh and lively. Citrus notes dominate the opening, accompanied by a spicy, almost peppery note that gives the whisky a nice tension. The distillery character is noticeable, but never overpowering. Fruity and floral flavours then emerge, reminiscent of perfumed peach. Grainy notes round off the picture and ensure a natural, very pure perception of the distillate.

Finish

The finish shows that despite the modern lightness, classic elements are also present. The oak comes to the fore, accompanied by a pleasant cinnamon note. Not overly long, but a harmonious and spicy finish.

Verdicts

Marcel

Nc'Nean Organic Batch 20 is a refreshing, straightforward whisky that simply delights with its lively fruitiness and sustainable character. No drama, just a likeable companion for relaxed evenings – modern, fresh, and with a wink.

Sascha

With a pronounced balance between fresh citrus notes, spicy pepperiness, and subtle oak, this organic Highland whisky presents a clear, structured composition. Despite its youth, it impresses with harmonious cask maturation and sustainable production, yet remains rather restrained in its flavor profile overall.
