Tasting notes·Buffalo Trace

Buffalo Trace (45%)

In our previous report, we already delved into Buffalo Trace's entry-level offering in their portfolio. Without age statement and still extremely popular in the USA, little has changed in the characteristics mentioned since then. However, this time we have the "90 Proof" (45% alcohol by volume) version of Kentucky Straight Bourbon in front of us, which is always bottled at this strength in its country of origin.

Tasting

Nose

Here, we encounter familiar aromas: fundamental bourbon notes of intense, buttery caramel and beautiful vanilla. In addition, there are nuances of toasted oak. The slight solvent component that was noticeable in the 40% ABV version takes a back seat here. Instead, spice notes, and especially mint, are more prominent.

Palate

The difference between 40% and 45% alcohol content is truly noticeable on the palate. The bourbon remains pleasantly smooth, and sweet flavors come through much more strongly, accompanied by a truly lovely oak note.

Finish

The expected trend continues in the finish as well. There is a presence of wood, candied popcorn, and a hint of rye and mint.

Verdicts

Marcel

Buffalo Trace at 45% comes across as noticeably livelier and sweeter than its 40% counterpart – this bourbon simply brings drinking pleasure without being overly complex. For a classic in this price range, it hits exactly the flavor profile you expect from a solid Kentucky Straight. Not an adventure, but a reliable companion for relaxed evenings.

Sascha

At 45% ABV, Buffalo Trace presents itself as balanced and structured, with the sweet bourbon notes and subtle oak harmonizing well. The higher alcohol strength eliminates the flat spots found in the 40% version, though the overall complexity remains moderate. A solid representative of the Kentucky Straight Bourbon category, especially impressive for its value for money.

What it is worth

We do not yet hold bottle-level auction results — that sits behind Whisky Hunter’s authenticated feed. What follows is the market for Buffalo Trace as a whole, which sets the weather for this bottling without pricing it.
